Growing up, my father was a corpsman for the Navy. For those of you unfamiliar with the military, that translates to my father working in the medical field. I didn't get to travel to exotic countries or see the world. I spent the majority of my childhood in a small town on the coast of Maine. In many ways, that experience was the best and worst time of my life. When I say best, I mean that I discovered the joys of writing. What started out as an assignment for my independent writing course, turned into a life-long passion of adventure and escape. I was asked to write a one page story and by the beginning of the next year, I'd plunked a 3 subject notebook onto my teacher's desk and announced that I was done for the year. My teacher, a man I will be grateful to for the rest of my life, blinked at the notebook, riffled through the pages and told me, "Okay."
In the years that followed, I began writing more and more. It was an escape for me. Growing up as an overweight child, I was subjected to the common name calling and taunts. It's a fact of life--one all too many kids must face--and I found ways to cope. I emersed myself into my stories. I became the characters. The pretty, popular girl who found trouble in the oddest places, I became the hero who saved the city from the clutches of the bank robber, etc. Though not necessarily healthy, my coping mechanism bloomed and blossomed into a passion that has of yet to be sated.
In August of 1996, I met my husband. Having just graduated from high school, I wanted to take a break from school and join the work force. I got a job at the military department store called, the NEX and happened to be working the cash registers when my future husband strolled through my line, fresh out of boot camp. We chatted and by the next afternoon, I had a date. Exactly six months to the day later, we were married. He was do to ship out to his first submarine and...SURPRISE! I was pregnant with our first child. I'd known for a while that if I ever had a daughter I would name her after my first character in my Young Adult series. So, on September 29, 1997, Faith Marie Thomas became Faith Marie Robinson. Six weeks later, my husband and I received more news. We were expecting our second--and consequently last--child. I toyed with the idea, if a boy, of naming him after the sibling to my other character. For nine months, I watched television and pondered over what to name our second child. I won't lie, the show I watched the most during my second pregnancy was the '80s and '90s hit, Saved By The Bell. I became infatuated with the name Zack. On August 13, 1997, Zachary Michael Robinson was born. The best of both worlds. Zachary from the show and Michael being the middle name to my character. Since then, I've continued with my stories, writing like a madwoman while my beloved husband was away on the various six-month deployments he had to go on. Turns out, writing romance is what I'm best at. With my debut novel on sale now, I think I've found my calling. Only time will tell and if the fates are kind, y'all will be along with me for the ride....
